Gordon McKay Library—Harvard University

Elaine Construction was contracted to complete the renovation of the Gordon McKay Library at Harvard University. The project consisted of a new volume to house the circulation desk area, computer work stations, stack areas, as well as places for group and individual study. Two new aedicules were constructed within the volume to house library staff offices and a student lounge. The walls of the new volumes were functionally sculpted to allow light from two large skylights to pour into the space. The abundant use of glass and steel for the new structures allow for adjacent public and private activity without losing the feeling of spaciousness and light of the original single volume.
